Of course, as with any job in any field, higher education is always a plus. Obtaining an Associate's degree, or even a Bachelor's degree, from an accredited culinary school will help you get a foot in the door for finding your first job in the kitchen. However, for the majority of kitchens, the sous chef is not an entry level, walk in position. Most sous chefs make their way to that rank through much training and job experience in that setting. In other words, it is earned through promotion as you gain more skill in your kitchen in which you work.
